Quick Ways to Attack Wrought Iron Security Doors
Normally these security doors open outward. In this instance due to it being below grade it opens inward due to the stairs. Either way, entry needs to be made. Here’s a few ways and all are based on the incident.
Minimum damage to the door
Pry the lock mechanism away from the jamb.
Cut out the problem - the lock
Last resort should it not work - get the rotary saw and cut the hinges away. Remember to cut the bottom hinge first.
Pry the Lock
Insert the fork side (facing away) between the frame and the jamb.
Use a striking tool to obtain the proper mechanical advantage of the halligan (5 inch mark - crotch of the fork). This will result in a load to fulcrum length of 2 inches.
Once the halligan is set, force the halligan and push in on the gate.
Pie Cut
Using a rotary saw, identify the locking mechanism and make a 45 degree cut from above the lock and through the door frame.
Just like venting a roof, make the cut starting where the first 45 degree cut ended and begin the second 45 degree cut going back and under the lock. Ensure the start of the second 45 degree cut begins by overlapping the original cut.
Open the door
Security Plate - Latch Protection
Using a saw, cut the lock protector between the door and frame straight through the locking mechanisms.
Open the door.
Anytime you come across security doors, don’t let them deter or delay you from making entry. Size-up the situation and identify the best possible way to remove the problem between you and where you need to go. Keep it simple and keep it smart.
Until next time; work hard, stay safe and live inspired.
